Eldorado National Forest
The Eldorado National Forest stretches from Lake Tahoe on its Northeastern
border to within an hour's drive of Sacramento on the southwest. It is ideally
located to attract outdoor enthusiasts. Thousands of visitors are drawn
each year to its rivers, lakes, and streams alive with fish, to the alpine
and Nordic skiing of its snow covered peaks and valleys, and to the numerous
campsites, picnic areas and hiking trails of its backcountry and its dense
forests.
The Eldorado is near Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area and is accessible
by two major highways, routes 50 and 88, making it an alluring recreation
destination. An abundance of camping and picnic grounds near good sources
of water and four hundred miles of hiking trails through all kinds of terrain,
from gentle oak foothills along the Eldorado's western border tot he 10,000
foot crest of the Sierra Nevada on its Eastern Edge, add immeasurably to
the forest's recreational appeal.
Following the discovery of gold in 1849, the miners who entered California
and crossed this land called it "el dorado" for the fabled Spanish
"land of gold." We hope that after you have enjoyed the forest's
natural riches, you will feel the name is even more appropriate today.
